This is a most unusual and fascinating book. It blends science, philosophy and practical imaging in a very unusual way. I am not quite sure that it is the most logical introduction to the science of medical imaging but it is one of the most intriguing accounts. It is probably most useful for somebody who has already started to understand medical imaging and has been frightened by the rather stereotypic major texts which go through everything from a to b. This book instead considers the basics of what is an image and what makes an image, well before going through the various techniques. Indeed, a student trying to find out about computed tomography might have to go to several parts of the book to get the didactic instructions. But what makes the book such fun is the way in which, for example, the diagram to explain baseball hitting is juxtaposed with MR images on the adjacent page.
