We agree with Drs. Frech and Stevens that the Global Initiative for Cancer Registries (GICR) should be highlighted as an exemplary model of multi-stakeholder engagement. International consortiums focused on monitoring and health information systems are needed to improve outcomes by identifying successes and highlighting actionable areas for improvement. To achieve sustainable success, cancer programs must be integrated into functional health systems, aided by knowledge of best practices and supported by flexible funding structures suited to each country’s unique health system needs. GICR will help to identify areas of greatest cancer burden, which is a necessary prerequisite to designing effective cancer control strategies and then monitoring progress over time. …
