Abstract
Orthopaedic surgeons treat a variety of conditions, but it is difficult to know which ones should be afforded priority over others. The SF-12 health status questionnaire has been proven to be indicative of the severity of disease and its effect on patient quality of life. We assessed the SF-12 scores of 253 patients attending for pre-operative assessment at a regional orthopaedic unit over 1 month. Age, gender and orthopaedic conditions were subjected to multivariate analysis. The SF-12 score of individual patient is related primarily to the orthopaedic condition and also to age and gender. Patients with osteoarthritis of hips and knees have higher scores than those with foot and upper-limb disorders. In general, SF-12 scores of males were lower by 2.4 compared to females, and for each 1-year increment in age, the score increased by 0.78.
