The concept of brain death and the criteria used in the everyday definition of the concept are topics that have been the source of discussion (sometimes heated) over the past 40–50 years since the widespread introduction of mechanical ventilation and the constantly improving methods of resuscitation. The contribution by Zamperetti et al. [
1] on the definition of brain death raises some interesting points that are worth exploring. They are correct when they state that there is widespread acceptance of the concept of brain death in the Western hemisphere, but they are also correct when they point out that there is wide variation in the criteria for its defining. …
