Critically ill migrants with infection: diagnostic considerations for intensive care physicians in Europe

Europe has been witnessing an unprecedented wave of refugees and migrants during the past year. According to the EU statistics agency (Eurostat), more than 500,000 migrants have arrived so far this year, almost all of them having claimed asylum. Current migration routes are presented in Fig. 1 and further discussed in this issue by S. Tsiodras [1, 2]. With the Syrian conflict as the major driver, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey and Egypt serve as the first point of settlement for almost 4 million displaced persons. Greece and Italy are currently the major portals of entries into the EU, with Germany being the most popular final destination [2, 3].
