Pediatricians and others who care for children face a difficult dilemma. Many of the treatments the we use have never been adequately studied in children. Much of the time we are forced to extrapolate from studies that have been performed in adults, and hope that the effects will be similar in children. Yet over and over we are reminded that “children are not just little adults,” and we discover, often too late, that these treatments have risks and toxicities for children that could not have been anticipated beforehand. As such, we have a moral imperative to promote and perform high-quality research with children. …
