Abstract
Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a highly prevalent condition. To support our understanding of the available therapies, this systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) synthesized the available literature on online psychotherapy options for the management of AUD. This review searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, EMBASE, and Cochrane for randomized controlled trials pertaining to online psychotherapy for AUD. The NMA considered alcohol use and depression symptomatology reduction, alcohol abstinence, quality of life improvement, and study dropouts. 22 studies were included (n = 17,140). eCBT-based interventions were significantly more effective than no treatment, attention controls and psychoeducation across all outcomes of interest. Effectiveness and dropout rates were similar between e-CBT and in-person therapies. The quality of the data was moderate to low. This review suggested that eCBT-based interventions are effective in managing AUD and highlighted the need for more robust and rigorous studies pertaining to online psychotherapy for AUD.
