Thousands of patients have died in West Africa during the worst Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic recorded to date, and many more patients will die in the coming months [
1]. The overall case fatality rate in West Africa is 60–70 % but this rate is highly variable, depending greatly upon the treatment centre. Mortality also appears to be lower in repatriated patients and in infected healthcare workers receiving intensive care in non-resource constrained settings.
