Zusammenfassung

Die altersbedingte Makuladegeneration (AMD) ist die Hauptursache für Erblindung in Industrieländern. Populationsbasierte epidemiologische Untersuchungen liefern wichtige Daten zu Prävalenz, Inzidenz, Risikofaktoren und Zukunftstrends. In diesem Übersichtsbeitrag werden die wichtigsten epidemiologischen Studien zur AMD, ihre Methodik sowie die daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und deren Übertragbarkeit auf Deutschland dargestellt. Die wesentlichen Risikofaktoren sowohl für die Entstehung als auch für die Progression der AMD werden aufgeführt und hinsichtlich der existierenden Evidenz bewertet. Zukünftige Herausforderungen wie die Standardisierung von Klassifizierungssystemen und der Einsatz neuerer retinaler Bildgebung in epidemiologischen Studien werden diskutiert. In Deutschland gibt es aktuell nur wenig epidemiologische Daten zur AMD und somit einen hohen Nachholbedarf an epidemiologischer Forschung in der Augenheilkunde. Dieser wird dank verschiedener neuerer populationsbasierter Studien derzeit aufgearbeitet.
