Mini-incision hernioplasty: a novel technique or merely rediscovering an old one?

Journal authors owe the reader a duty of diligence; they should have performed a thorough literature search and exercise proper scholarship by giving credit where it is worth. We recently read an article newly published in an international journal, entitled, “Report of 100 open hernia repairs using a 2-cm incision: a novel technique,” describing the use of a “Tyco Versatik” stapler to fix the mesh via a small incision over the internal inguinal ring [
1]. No only did the authors make no reference to previous publications about the same technique, they made no mention of the results of the “100 repairs” while extolling all the virtues imaginable. Indeed, dating back to 1999, exactly the same technique was clearly illustrated in our article in
Surgical Endoscopy [
2]. Novel innovation pertaining to commonplace surgery such as hernia repair is an emotive subject. It is timely that we provide a critical appraisal of the technique based on our long experience. …
