Mortality in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is below 1% in outpatients, around 5% in inpatients, and up to 25% in intubated patients [13]. A recent study [4] estimated mortality near 50% in ICU patients requiring inotropes. A key issue is assessment of severity of illness in the emergency department (ED) to take a decision regarding site of care and because diagnostic workup and empirical choice of antibiotics should be different. …
