It is important to preoperatively anticipate the incidence of post-esophagectomy morbidity because post-esophagectomy morbidity can cause surgery-related mortality and deteriorate long-term outcomes in patients with esophageal cancer.
1 Clinically useful predictors for postoperative morbidity should consist of simple and objective parameters preoperatively obtained, which enables the surgeon to easily identify high-risk patients and take appropriate measures before surgery. Until now, the mean corpuscular volume and several nutritional markers have been suggested as useful predictors of post-esophagectomy morbidity.
2–4 Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a parameter in red blood cell size variability obtained from a general blood test, which can reflect nutritional status, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and prothrombotic effect, among others.
