Canadian surgery has been shaped by the geographic, political, and social context in which it exists. Canada contains a relatively small population in a large space, with few dense population centers. In the minds of many people, Canadian social values are represented by the guiding principles of its health care system, which is based on universal coverage through a single payer that is portable throughout the country. This system is designed to provide high quality care to all through a single public payer.
