We write concerning Skinner et al. [
1], “Practice guidelines for the supervising professional: intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring,” J Clin Monit Comput, reportedly endorsed by the Board of Directors of the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring (ASNM). We believe strongly that this document should not have been labeled as a “Practice Guideline” because, while it reflects the authors’ vision for the practice of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM), it fails to accurately reflect the current practice of IONM in the United States. Therefore, it should not be recognized as a guideline, i.e., an applicable standard to which practitioners should be expected to adhere. …
